In-Person at MODA
9th–12th Grade
What is Design Next?
Design Next is a monthly studio experience for high school students (grades 9–12) who want to explore different areas of design, create work they’re proud of, and build a portfolio that reflects their creativity, skills, and identity. See the whole series.
About This Session
This month in Design Next, students will explore architecture, where design shapes the spaces we live, work, and create in. They’ll dive into the basics of architectural thinking: floor plans, elevation sketches, materials, and user needs. Then, they’ll design and build a small-scale physical model of a structure they imagine—whether it’s functional, expressive, or futuristic.
What You’ll Do
Learn about foundational architectural concepts: layout, form, structure, and flow
Choose a space to design (studio, home, shop, creative hub) and sketch it out
Build a scale model using chipboard, paper, and other model-making materials
Consider how people would move through and experience your space
Photograph and document your process for your portfolio
Provide a space to share and provide constructive feedback
Practice collaboration, inclusivity, creative courage, imaginative problem-solving, storytelling, and critical thinking
This session is about turning your architectural ideas into something physical, structural, and imaginative.
Registration: $10.00 | $5.00 for MODA members
