About This Event

Join us for Drift the Map: South-View Cemetery & Lakewood Heights for a free walk and talk with Joel & Mira and special guest leaders:

During the walk, we will traverse Atlanta’s historic South-View Cemetery—the oldest African-American cemetery in Atlanta and the resting place of civil rights leaders John Lewis, Julian Bond, Hank Aaron, John Wesley Dobbs, and Alonzo Herndon.

We will then make our way down the Lakewood Heights railroad tracks stopping to eat at El Progreso #14, the much-loved taqueria destination in the back of a grocery store known by aficionados as “Prison Tacos” named for its proximity to the United States Penitentiary.

About DRIFT THE MAP

Drift the Map is a series of free artist-led walks co-facilitated by a father-daughter team, artists Joel Silverman, Mira Silverman and co-founder Darin Givens, in cooperation with ThreadATL and Museum of Design Atlanta. About once a month, we explore Atlanta neighborhoods and talk about urbanism, ecology, history, architecture, and public art. Every session has an experimental format, and no two walks are alike. We always begin in a different neighborhood and invite stakeholders from the community along as special guests and then explore arbitrary routes guided by our conversations or participants' personal connections to the place.

This series seeks to explore the mythogeography of Atlanta. Places have multiple meanings embedded into the fabric of their histories. By exploring the way the city defines itself through urban legends, discovering the official histories enshrined in street and neighborhood names and monuments, and researching the ways politically motivated encoding was introduced into the city grid through redlining policies, street names, and allocation of resources these walks meander through human stories and the spaces they inhabit.
