Join us for an evening of discovering the wonders of encrypted messages, history and storytelling, and hands-on community connection with workshop leader Sarah Lawrence!

From knotted Incan quipus to coded wartime embroidery, secret messages have been woven into history—literally.

People have always found ways to protect vital information in times of uncertainty, whether through underground resistance movements or covert communications. Today, as digital surveillance grows, we’re once searching for ways to share information beyond prying eyes


What You’ll Learn:

  • The Code of the Past: Get an introduction to the ancient Incan technique of using knotted cords to record vital information like census data and military strategies.

  • Knot Your Own Story: Create a quipu-inspired necklace, exploring this ancient form of record-keeping through hands-on crafting and creative expression!

  • By learning the language of knots, you’ll discover how secrecy and security have always been woven into human history.

About Sarah Lawrence:

Sarah Lawrence is a designer, illustrator, and creative technologist based in Atlanta, Georgia. She’s known for solving complex design problems and has worked with organizations like TEDx, DesignMadison, and MODA. Her work has been featured in Fast Company, 99U, and HLN, When she’s not creating, she’s spending time with her beloved pets, Peanut and Cocoa, surrounded by her thriving plant collection.
