Al Dente Tour: The Saucy History of Tomatoes

  • Museum of Design Atlanta 1315 Peachtree Street Northeast Atlanta, GA, 30309 United States (map)

In-Person

It’s hard to imagine pasta without tomatoes, but did you know that tomatoes were once considered poisonous? Or that it took over 200 years from the first time tomatoes appeared in Italy to when tomatoes finally found their way into a pasta sauce? Tomatoes have a long, misunderstood history, one full of myths, legends, and even deaths! Who knew a fruit (or is it a vegetable?) could be so controversial? Join us for a guided tour of Al Dente as we explore the saucy history of tomatoes!

‌About the Exhibition

Al Dente: The Design of Pasta explores the many ways in which the processes of making, cooking, and eating pasta serve as acts of design. It showcases an array of pasta shapes — each created to maximize flavor, texture, and nutritional value — and the tools used to make them. Also addressed are the impacts of industrialization on pasta design, pasta’s promotion to consumers through graphic arts, the future of pasta in our era of 3D and 4D printing, and contemporary efforts to create new pasta shapes.
