About the Event
Want to walk in Midtown's annual Parliament of Owls Lantern Parade?
Led by Chantelle Rytter and the Krewe of Grateful Gluttons, it’s approaching quickly (August 3rd), and you’re invited to participate in the activation — all you’ll need is an owl lantern, and this is your chance to make one!
Grab a friend (or fly solo), bring a beer, and join local lantern artist and Krewe member Sam Duong Woloszynski for an evening at the museum, during which she’ll coach you through the process of lantern making as you work with a kit included in the cost of registration. Sam recommends this workshop for those who feel confident in crafting, though you won’t need prior experience in lantern making. (Manual dexterity is a must for lanterns, though we’ll have an alternative that only requires scissors!)
You’ll leave the workshop with an owl lantern — your ticket to the Parliament of Owls Lantern Parade — and the foundation to continue creating lanterns and lighting up Atlanta!

Sam Duong Woloszynski is a local lantern artist, parade performer, and member of the Krew of the Grateful Gluttons. She has performed in over a dozen parades, and her most recent lantern artwork was an 8-foot-long koi fish (a collaboration with lantern artist Santiago Arconada) that debuted in the Atlanta BeltLine Lantern Parade earlier this year. She's also a certified facilitator, dance instructor, and workshop designer, and she's excited to spend an evening making art with you!

The artist who created the owl lantern kits we'll be using is the community parade artist Chantelle Rytter, Captain and Artistic Director of the Krewe of the Grateful Gluttons, and founder of the Atlanta BeltLine Lantern Parade, the Parliament of Owls Lantern Parade in Midtown, and several other annual parades based in public participation.
Rytter grew up in Baltimore and studied integrative arts at Penn State University. Living in New Orleans, she fell under the spell of parade culture and the notion that creative play can be a civic gift. Chantelle founded the Krewe of the Grateful Glutton in New Orleans in 1999.
Artist Statement:
Our artistic mission is to create open participatory platforms for creative play in public spaces. Parades are where a community sees itself. Lantern Parades are where a community sees itself as playful volumes of light, moving to the same rhythm, through a shared space. We believe this experience and the memory of it has a lasting positive impact on how people feel about their public space and who they share it with. When we lay down joyful shared memories together in a place, it is a blessing on that place.
We create large scale lantern puppets because we believe in the experiential value of real encounters with fantastical creatures. When we encounter and interact with art beyond our imagination in a familiar space, it expands our capacity to imagine what is possible here. We hope our work serves as a ritual reminder that we have the collective agency to regularly create wondrous experiences for ourselves and our community. As traditions, participatory creative celebrations reinforce our belief in the extraordinary nature of our collective character and the place we call home.
Creating parade art with our hands
for the purpose of delighting perfect strangers
with whom we have a date
to dance together beneath the sky
is a vital virtue of human kind.

The Museum of Design Atlanta is conveniently located in the Midtown Arts District, right across the street from the Woodruff Arts Center at 1315 Peachtree St. NE Atlanta, GA 30309.
MODA is located on the ground floor of the 1315 Peachtree Building. The building is a mix use site and is shared by MODA, the Peachtree Public Library, and Perkins+Will.
MODA resides on the land of the Mvskoke (Muscogee / Creek) people.

Parking
MODA does not offer designated parking. There are public parking lots located in the Midtown Arts district, as well as metered parking available along Peachtree St NE. The paid Lanier parking deck at 1337 Peachtree St NE is the closest deck within walking distance of the museum.
Bike Riders
For visitors traveling by bike, there are plenty of bike racks conveniently located around MODA! You can find them along Peachtree Street, including right outside of MODA, and at the Arts Center MARTA Station. Don’t forget to bring a lock!
MARTA
If visiting by train, take the North or South rail line to the Arts Center MARTA Station (N5), located directly behind the Woodruff Arts Center (accessible). Exit the Arts Center Station at the top level by the Peachtree Street exit. You will be behind the Woodruff Arts Center. MODA is located directly across the street from the Woodruff Arts Center. Use the cross-walk at the intersection of 16th and Peachtree to reach our building.

Please note that manual dexterity is required to complete an owl lantern.
Designers with different styles of learning or special needs are welcome in MODA public programs. We will be able to most effectively help everyone learn and enjoy this experience if we know about those needs in advance of the program. Please email maryk@museumofdesign.org with questions or information.

MODA reserves the right to cancel a program if the minimum enrollment requirements are not met, but don't worry: should MODA have to cancel, we will gladly issue a full refund to all registrants. If you need to cancel your plans for any reason, we kindly request that you notify us at least 7 days prior to the event start. By doing so, we can process a refund for the ticket cost (minus a small $10 processing fee per class). Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds for cancellations made less than 7 days before an event.
